BIO
The Bitteroots are an Atlanta/Decatur-based original jam-rock band founded in 2008. Fronted by female vocalist Laura Dees, the band has a sound that’s been called a “unique brand of soulful rock.” The Bitteroots’ groove-oriented approach to rock n roll has drawn comparisons to the Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Melissa Etheridge and Janis Joplin. From pop melodies to extended jams, The Bitteroots’ sets run the gamut with something for everybody.Along with Dees, an accomplished songwriter and powerful singer who joined the band in 2010, The Bitteroots also include founding members Bill Taylor on bass and Mike Davis on drums. Guitarist Kyle Bryant joined The Bitteroots in 2013 and saxophonist Derron Nuhfer became an official member in September 2014.
The Bitteroots have released four compilations of original music, the latest being the single “Under the Big Sky,” recorded in the fall of 2013 at The Music Farm studio by Mark van Allen (Govt. Mule, Indigo Girls, Blueground Undergrass, Zac Brown Band, Whiskey Gentry). The melodic title track is accompanied by two bonus tracks, the hard-rocking “Defenseless” and a re-tooled version of “Try Me Again” which first appeared on the band’s debut release, “French Fries,” in 2011.
Other releases include 2012’s full-length “Central of Georgia” and 2013’s “After The Rain.”
The Bitteroots have shared the stage with: Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers Band),The Freddy Jones Band, Allgood, Col. Bruce Hampton, Arrested Development, 7 Walkers (Bill Kreutzmann of The Grateful Dead), Elephant Revival, The Milk Carton Kids, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Anders Osborne, Coy Bowles (Zac Brown Band), The Ries Brothers, Dead Confederate, Michelle Malone, Cigar Store Indians, Adron, The Deadfields, The Sundogs, The Shadowboxers, Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics, Delta Moon, Eliott Bronson, Sydney Rhame, Tedo Stone, HoneyHoney, and many other great bands and artists.

Recent Press and News:
The Covington News - Speaking of the band's sound, many have described it as Jam Rock or Roots Rock, and that's certainly an apt description; however, there are other elements in play as well, in this writer's estimation. For one thing, the group has decided Pop sensibilities, and there's nothing wrong with that. While they have the ability to explore and expand songs with their jamming and feeding off each other, these songs themselves are well crafted with an emphasis placed on vocal melodies, smart chord progressions, and the aforementioned rhythmic elements. It's a marvelous sound! And under the current, at least, there are some Jazz elements as well. As I mentioned in an article last year, I'm a big, big fan of The Bitteroots. Ever since I first saw them almost two years ago in Milledgeville, GA, I count them as one of my favorite groups. And I'm not just talking Georgia bands, or unsigned bands, I'm talking all-time. Seriously, they're that good. 3/20/2017
Daily Buzz Newspaper - Since 2008, the group has toured all over the Southeast, most recently playing at festivals like the Sweetwater 420 Festival and ]une’s Decatur Musical Festival. The band will play at the Yellow Daisy Festival in the fall. “We’ve been playing a lot of bigger shows in the last few years,” said Taylor, one of the original members of the band along with drummer Mike Davis. “We have shared the stage with Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band, The Freddy Jones Band and Col. Bruce Hampton. We have a lot friends, so you never know who will join us on stage or who we will be on stage with, especially at the festivals.” The band, whose current lineup is about two years old, has a couple of hundred songs or more on their list to play, after producing five albums. They will also play some cover songs at Saturday’s show. The band is currently writing new material and have plans for a new album by 2017. 7/6/2016
The Covington News - Their live performances can be described as electric. Lots of energy. Great stage presence. Very good instrumentation. Bill, as I mentioned, plays bass and locks in with drummer Mike Davis to make a superb rhythm section that lays down the foundation of this group. Kyle Bryant is an exceptional guitar player. Killer chops. This guy can lay down some gnarly leads, but he also is great rhythm player and can lock in the groove with Bill and Mike. Derron Nuhfer plays saxophone for the band and that might be the extra thing that really makes this such a great listening experience. It augments the sound just right. That brings us to the lead vocals. Laura Dees. This woman is something else. Man, she can sing. Great stage presence as well. You put all that together and you get as good a band as you’ll ever likely see live. They’re truly a great group.
Huntly Hills - The Bitteroots can be found playing all over the southeast but mostly here in Atlanta; with recent shows at The Atlanta Dogwood Festival and Smith’s Olde Bar. They have shared he stage with a range of artists from Col. Bruce Hampton to Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers. This month The Bitteroots will be playing their 8th anniversary show at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur on May 14th.. 5/1/16
The Piedmont Chronicles - The Bitteroots are just a fantastic band. Stylistically, think of an intersection of Jam/Groove/Roots Rock & Jazz Fusion with Pop sensibilities. Laura Dees is a supreme talent on vocals. Just magnificent! Mike Davis is a top-notch drummer and interlocks with Bill Taylor's epic bass lines to create a righteous rhythm section. Kyle Bryant's guitar work channels equal parts Jimmy Herring & Robert Cray, while Derron Nuhfer's tasteful saxophone lines adds yet another incredible layer to this superb sound. Their songwriting is very impressive and they plug in a few well-placed covers that celebrate their sound and influences. 3/18/2016
